Today marks the very first day of my MA journey. I've attended the (unfortunately still) virtual orientation day in the afternoon. Such a shame that because of the current pandemic we are not allowed to gather on a large group, but nevertheless happy to be able to kick-off the MA program on a good start. I got to know about the campus facilities, other programs, and the lecturers. It was all very interesting and I can't wait to get more acquainted with the other students.
In the evening, I attended my very first lecture on Common Research Method via Zoom. We basically learned about the first steps of creating our own research. Starting with the research question. Harah has provided us with what she called a very dum-dum template, which is actually very useful and a good place for me to start.
I'm going with the Peranakan Culture as the main topic of my research because it is something that I take an interest in and am quite familiar with the culture as I am a Peranakan myself (though I'm very Indonesianized). I'm still not sure about my project title and from the exercise came up with a few different questions that I wish to explore as I go along.
From this session, I also learned about how to put data into a system. Raw data has no meaning, it does not speak for itself, therefore it has to be put in a hierarchy in which they'll make sense. And that's when a research framework comes in handy. The purpose of a research framework is to make sense of data by looking for patterns and to assign meanings to said data. To build a foundation to demonstrate how this study can be advantageous.
