I showed Nur my 3 design briefs that are mentioned previously and the ideation of all three. Nur suggested that I shouldn’t call them 3 briefs, but instead make it into one big brief and call the three briefs as experiments/projects. Brief 1 and 2 (workshop and customization tool) can be put as one project, and instead of creating an app, maybe create a digital guide and DIY kit to send out to future beading students/customers. I think this is a good idea because today, people are used to stay home a lot and the idea of creating a DIY kit is really common, that even restaurants today create a DIY kit for their meal so that customers can bring home the restaurant experience. Nur also suggested that I have to keep the shape of the shoes instead of making it into other shapes, and make the pattern easier with less bead colors (more beginner friendly).
Based on her comments, I've developed the small projects further, because in the end of the day, they go hand in hand.
1. Workshop
Objective: To create a more meaningful experience and bond with others through craft, for users to understand the Peranakan culture through craft.
To provide an authentic, real-life experience. Adding value to the craft and experience. Give people more motivation to start and finish.
What to do: Gather 2-3 people for the workshop, young adults from different background
From that workshop, I plan to gather feedback from the users that will be useful for the customization app and the take home kit. Mostly to know what works for them and what doesn't. At the same time also recording the process of the teaching in the workshop to be turned into the virtual guide that will accompany the take home kit.

2. Customization App
Modernizing the beading process + customization
Objective: To modernize the still very traditional beading process without losing any of its cultural context to make it easier for the craftsmen and other practitioners, and make it more appealing to the target audience, and at the same time introduce the culture through craft.
Outcome: A digital app
Target audience: Craftsmen, beading students/practitioners, young adults (future consumers)

I have the idea of creating this reusable pindangan. Pindangan is the frame that is traditionally used to suspend the fabric in which we are doing the beading on. The traditional pindangan is not easy to make, there's a special craftsmanship that you need to master and it is not reusable. So I have this idea of creating a reusable one, probably using a fastening clip that can be easily be removed. I'm not taking away the idea of the pindangan, but only modernizing it by taking out the pain point.
Objective: To bring home the beading experience. Easily transportable and accessible. Maybe even sold online.
As for the customization tool, this is the idea that I have in mind. This tool will be useful for both craftsmen and users. It's basically a fool-proof tool to create your own pattern, the features will be click and fill the square guides with colors, you can either draw your own or even load an existing pattern, move them around, or mix and match existing pattern. For example you can easily load in a flower pattern and mix and match it with other pattern like butterflies.
3. Take Home Kit + Virtual Guide.

Outcome: A beading kit + complete virtual guide
Target audience: Young adults (future consumers)

This what the kit should contain. There are many alternatives to a lot of the elements, for example the pindangan could be easily replaced by a embroidery hoops that does the job the same way, and traditionally cornstarch glue is used but I must fins other alternatives because it's not feasible for users to use cornstarch glue. I'm also thinking of including other informations in the virtual guide such as history of the craft, meanings of the patterns, etc. to further educate the users.
4. Collaboration Platform
Digital Platform to connect designers and craftsmenObjective: To connect the traditional craftsmen to other designers or business owners, to entice collaboration and provoke dialogues, to contemporize the craft.
Outcome: A digital platform, app or website
Target Audience: Young adults, designers, artists, business owners
Below is the kind of messaging that I want to convey through this platform.
Early-stage startup that provides the environment to learn and collaborate with local talents and make a significant impact.
Change the way art is valued
Sustain your local businesses/artists
Level up your business. Stand out and utilize art like never before.
Check out our talents
A vision of the future of design collaborations built around local talents. We’re building the platform to empower these talents to make a living so they can focus on making the art we all love.
