Design Lab: Cultural Probe

Example of a probe kit by Binsen Wang via Behance

Cultural probe kit is a tool used to gather qualitative data, using open-ended activities given to a group of participants to learn more about a topic. They start conversations amongst designers and bring novel insights. It helps to understand the everyday challenges, goals, and needs of users at the beginning of a design process.

Experimenting with cultural probes redefined what research can be. It created an interesting relationship between designers and participants. The types of insights gathered will be varied and will open up many more discussions.

The chart above illustrates my idea of a cultural probe.

What it will contain:
Introduction card
Envelope 1: Introduction exercise. Card game with keywords. To test their existing knowledge of the Peranakan culture + their feelings/emotions associated with the culture
Envelope 2: Image capture exercise
Envelope 3: Museum exercise
Envelope 4: Post-mortem exercise. Has your opinion changed? How do you feel about it now? Actions you are willing to take?
Presents and freebie

What we want to probe:
Existing Knowledge
Emotions
(Sources of) influence
Assumptions

The main goal is basically to compare their existing knowledge/feelings/assumptions about Peranakan culture VS their feelings after learning more about the culture from the museum. And to find out whether their feelings/assumptions about the culture have changed. And to dig deeper about which part resonates with them more.
