Interdisciplinary studies involve the combination of two or more academic disciplines into one research project. We basically draw knowledge from several other fields that are related to our current main one.
It's about collecting information by thinking across boundaries, the goal is to have a more 360degree view of our topic.
In my case, I will be looking at culture as my main topic, my main starting point. On top of that, I'm going to look into history. In order to do any kind of research, I feel like it is very important to first understand the history. Where the culture starts/migrated from then we can see how it is rooted and developed until this day. Also to compare the condition of the culture from before and how it exists today.
Sociology, a very important part of culture is the people. Because actually culture is carried, migrated, and lived through people. So it is very important to understand the social behavior of people of this culture and to see the patterns of social relationship between the member of the culture.
Anthropology, the study of human behavior in the present and in the past. I think it’s important for me to explore this because my research is based on the fact/hypothesis that the Peranakan culture is getting forgotten, therefore it’s important for me to understand how the people of this culture behave in the past VS now, to see how do we evolved to this point, here, now.
Design, is a discipline that will help me create a solution to my research problem. To coordinate and integrate issues throughout the research cycle, to achieve a holistic solution that will benefit my cause.
Another discipline that I'm thinking to look into is psychology, to see how cultural meanings, practices, and institutions influence and reflect individual human psychologies and further reflect on their behavior. Because again, people are a very important part of a culture, therefore it is important for researchers to understand psychology to see how culture evolved/disappeared over time.
