Preliminary Research: Survey

I decided to conduct an online survey as preliminary research instead of the cultural probe kit, because I feel like this survey is more efficient and more relatable to the type of information I'm trying to collect. I am so happy that I managed to hit my ideal demographic through this research. I am aiming at the general public with mostly the "young generation" aged 18-30 years old. There not many Peranakans in Singapore (there are no exact data about this unfortunately because Peranakan is not considered a race in Singapore) and I think it is reflected in my survey result.

The main conclusion that I can draw from this research is that people, in general, have very little knowledge about the Peranakan culture and it doesn't come as a surprise for me. I used the Peranakan kasut manek (traditional beaded shoes) as an example in this survey. While there are many types of Peranakan crafts (embroidery, kebaya, batik, beadings, jewellery, porcelain, furniture) only a few are available in Singapore. I did not manage to find any Peranakan porcelain or furniture maker in Singapore, so the scope of my research is limited to what's available here. Most of the craftsmen I found are craftsmen of kebaya and beaded shoes, and the Peranakan associations and national heritage board, do not have any data/information about these last-standing craftsmen in Singapore either. There is definitely a gap for research in that area.

I used the kasut manek as an example, quoting that these pieces are like art, it can take up to 100 hours to make and can cost up to $1000. Needless to say, 84% of them do not want to get these pairs for themselves/friends/family. Some of their concerns are price point, comfort, and it is not trendy/fashionable. However, there are opportunities that could consider them to buy, including lower price points, modernized color/style, and personalization. I also asked some consumer purchasing behavior questions, asking them what is the most important aspect when buying a product and managed to rate style, quality, brand, and price. This gives me an insight into what the consumers are looking for that will help me create a strategy to fit the Peranakan culture into the market. This survey gives me a better understanding of the public in general and gives me better insight to plan my next steps.

The exact questions I asked in the survey are as follows:
